Elizabeth Edgar, 74, Mother Of Governor
September 28, 1991|By Hugh Dellios, Chicago Tribune.

SPRINGFIELD — Elizabeth ``Betty`` Edgar was an active, longtime resident of Downstate Charleston, who, after her husband, Cecil, died in 1953, raised three boys alone, one of whom eventually became governor of Illinois.

The mother of Gov. Jim Edgar died Friday at St. John`s Hospital in Springfield of complications of hip surgery. She had been hospitalized for three weeks. She was 74.

Mrs. Edgar ranked high among the confidants her son kept close at hand in his years as secretary of state and governor. Among Edgar`s automatic-dial buttons to political and legislative advisers on the telephone in his Capitol office was one marked ``Mom.``

Gov. Edgar recently took a day off from his busy schedule to accompany his mother to the Coles County Fair.

Mrs. Edgar was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston and the Guild, a volunteer organization serving the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in nearby Mattoon.

``Everybody knew Betty Edgar. She was a very pleasant and sincere person who was always willing to help people,`` said Joan Schmidt, associate athletic director at Eastern Illinois University, for whom Mrs. Edgar was a secretary for several years until 1984. ``She didn`t expect any special privileges.``

Mrs. Edgar was born Elizabeth Moore on Dec. 11, 1916, in the east central Illinois town of Humboldt. She graduated from Mattoon High School and attended Eastern Illinois University.

Other survivors include two sons, and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Shrader Funeral Home in Arcola. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Charleston. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery in Humboldt.

The governor requested that donations in his mother`s memory be made to the Charleston Carnegie Public Library.
