Funeral Mass for Sister Mary Janet (Dorothy May) Newberry, 82, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Mount St. Joseph Convent. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She had worked as a nurse in Muskegon, Mich., and served in the United States Army Nurses Corps as a nurse and was a commissioned officer.
In 1945 she entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Providence in Seattle. She made her first profession of vows in 1947 and her final vows in 1950.
She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the College of Great Falls (Mont.).
Sr. Newberry was a licensed nurse in Idaho, Montana and Washington. Her ministry assignments included hospitals and care centers in Seattle, Everett, Wash., Olympia, Missoula, Great Falls, Mont., Fort Benton, Mont., Colfax, Wash., Wallace, Idaho, and Spokane. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital from 1950 to 1952 and returned to Spokane to St. Joseph Nursing Home from 1975 to 1987.
She retired at Mount St. Joseph in Spokane in 1987.
Survivors include a brother, William Newberry and a sister, Claire Multer, both of Coldwater, Mich.
