Samuel Bender, 80 years old, one of the oldest and a pioneer resident of the town, passed away at his home here Sunday afternoon, October 14, 1923, at 1:45 PM. Mr. Bender had been failing in health for some time, but had been confined to his bed less than a week when the end came. A daughter, Mrs. Laura Morgan, and son, Clark Bender, both of Omaha, were with him when he passed away.

Mr. Bender was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1843, and came to Wellington, Colorado, from Louisville, Nebraska, twenty-one years ago when the place contained but one store and a few dwellings. He was a stone and brick mason by trade and a good workman. Mr. Bender laid the foundation for many of the homes here and also built the chimneys and cisterns. He was a careful and conscientious workman and his services were always in demand for work in his line. He was a good citizen, honest and trustworthy.

Mr. Bender is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rosa (Millen) Bender of Omaha, five daughters, Mrs. Anna Masilko (Rudolph) of Omaha, Mrs. Ella Brubaker (Walter) of Hendley, Nebraska, Mrs Nora Linden (Frank) of Litchfield, Nebraska, Mrs. Laura Morgan (Charles) and Miss Helen Bender of Omaha, and one son, Clark Bender, also of Omaha.

The remains were shipped from Fort Collins, Colorado, accompanied by Mrs. Morgan and Clark Bender, Wednesday morning to Omaha, where funeral services will be held Thursday and interment will be made at Louisville, Nebraska, the former home of the family.
