Civil War Veteran
Private, Co. F, 18th Massachusetts Infantry
Private, Co. H, 56th Massachusetts Infantry

The son of John H. and Lydia (Washburn) Adams.

Husband of Isabella Maria Banks, who he married at Dorchester, MA on Aug. 9, 1854. They were the parents of William, B. born July 29, 1855; Sarah Carroline Bannister, born Feb. 15, 1857; John Francis, born Sept. 18, 1858; and Elias Washburn, born Jan. 27, 1860.

Elias was a 26 year-old Carpenter from Duxbury, MA, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on April 19, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. F. Wounded in the left eye at Second Bull Run on August 30, 1862, he was taken as a Prisoner of War, but paroled at Groveton Battlefield on Sept. 2, 1862. He was subsequently discharged due to his wounds at Ebenezer Hospital, Washington, DC on Sept. 18, 1862.

Elias opened a small provisions store in Boston following his discharge which opened in Dec. 1862. There's no telling if the store was a success or failure, but more likely the latter as he enlisted again for three years service on Jan. 2, 1864 as a Private in Co. H, 56th Mass. Infantry and was discharged from military service on July 12, 1865 near Alexandria, VA.

Following his military service Elias was employed in cotton mills. He died at the Soldier's Home in Chelsea, MA.
