James McMechan was born in Castlewellan, Down, Ireland. He was the 6th child of David and Sarah Wylie McMechan. He immigrated to America in Oct. 1881 on the States Ship "Nebraska" along with his mother, brother John, and sister Margaret. For awhile he lived in Galesburg Illinois working as a florist, but after marrying Winifred Parker, they moved to Boone Iowa where he and brother John owned the McMechan Pharmacy. His long life saw many changes in the world but he never forgot his Scots-Irish roots. His death was a great sorrow for all who knew him.
