Benjamin Dyer was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to George Dyer and Rachel Dalton in the year 1778. On 01 Jul 1801, he took Miss Mary "Polly" Gravely, daughter of Joseph Gravely and Eleanor Cox, as his wife. They made their home next to Benjamin's parents, George and Rachel Dyer, in Leatherwood, Henry County, Virginia, and raised a family of eight known children.

Benjamin served his immediate community as a Justice and a larger constituency as a Representative to the Virginia General Assembly. As well, he served in the Virginia Militia and fought in the War of 1812.

Benjamin Dyer died 12 Jul 1823 at the young age of 45.
