Donald W. Batchelder

SOMERSWORTH - Donald W. (Batch) Batchelder, 85, of 397 High St., died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005.

Born Dec. 4, 1919, in Wells, Maine, he was the son of Willis and Ada (Hutchins) Batchelder.

He attended Wells High School, where he excelled in athletics and earned the title of "Wells Iron Man". He graduated in 1935, and afterward enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in Washington, D.C., during World War II, where he met and married Dorothy Dorr in 1945.

He was devoted to his family and will be sadly missed by his wife, Doris M (Leblanc) St. Jean Batchelder, of Somersworth; three sons, William "Bill" V. Batchelder and wife, Diane, of The Villages, Fla., James D. Batchelder and wife, Andrea, of South Berwick, Maine, and Edward W. Batchelder of South Berwick, Maine; four daughters, Donna B. Curtis and husband, Richard, of Jackman, Maine, Frances (Fran) A. Batchelder of Rochester, Jane K. Frankie and husband, Michael, of Dover, and Mary Jo Herman of Manchester. He also leaves behind a brother, Roger Batchelder, and wife, Rose, of Wells, Maine; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Dorr) Batchelder, and his sister, Hyacinth Kennedy.

— WE REMEMBER: Dorothy and Donald lived in Wells and South Berwick, Maine, and in Portsmouth. They were married for 55 years before Dorothy's death, and raised a family of seven children.

In 2001, he married Doris St. Jean and moved to Somersworth. He was noted for his green thumb and was an avid and lifelong gardener.

— After returning from the war, Mr. Batchelder was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He worked in the sheet metal shop and later in the Engineering Department, where he was a member of the IFPTE and was noted for his "Batchisms."

During that time, he couched Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and the St. Michael's basketball team. He was also active with the Marshwood Football Boosters.

He served the South Berwick Sewer District as treasurer for 29 years, during which time there was continuous flow. He also served several terms on the South Berwick Board of Selectmen. He retired from the Navy yard in 1980.

In retirement, he worked part time for the Eckhart Engineering in Dover, and was a custodian of grounds for the South Berwick Cemetery Association.

— He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #38 and was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and more lately of Holy Trinity Church in Somersworth.

SERVICES: Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Michael's Church, South Berwick, with the Rev. John Skehan, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will take place at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery South Berwick.
