Orange City, Fla. - Benjamin F. Matthews, 91, died Monday, August 20, 2012, in Orange City, Fla., at the Halifax Hospice Care Center with family by his side.

Services in celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, where his family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be presented by American Legion Post #26, Davenport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler (1625 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Orange City, FL 32763).

Mr. Matthews was a graduate of Rayen High School, Youngstown, Ohio, and The Ohio State University with an economics degree. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. He served with the 502nd parachute infantry, 101st airborne division in Europe and with the Seventh Calvary regiment of the First Calvary division in Korea. He received three Purple Hearts, two Bronze stars and a United Nation Service medal during his World War II and Korean service.

He was the owner of Matthews Office Equipment in Davenport. He retired in 1995 and moved to DeLand, Fla. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Davenport Country Club, (also the old Davenport Club) and the DeLand Country Club. Mr. Matthews was a member of the Davenport, Iowa, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees and Kiwanis club.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; daughters, Kit Stouffer and Meg Matthews; son, Bill Matthews; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son, John Matthews, and his mother, Katherine S. Matthews in 1986.
