Joseph "Uncle Joe" Majikes, 77, of Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday in Hospice Community Care. Born on July 14, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the later Charles, B. Majikes, former Wilkes-Barre Township chief of police, and the late Valerie Margavage Majikes Williams. Joseph was a graduate of the Scotland School, where he was a three-sport standout athlete, setting several school records, some of which still stand today. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served with the Army. Uncle Joe was a former Wilkes-Barre City police officer and was employed by General Lamp Co. for several years. He was a devoted and dedicated employee of Gus Genetti, serving as parking lot manager for many years. He was a communicant and hospitality minister at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church and a former volunteer assistant coach of the Bishop Hoban High School girls basketball team. Uncle Joe's athletic prowess led to stints with the semi-professional Wilkes-Barre Barons Basketball and a professional baseball career, signing a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics on March 10, 1949. He also participated in numerous basketball and baseball tournaments and leagues, including the Central Baseball League. His favorite hobby was horse racing and he was an ardent supporter of Pocono Downs for many years. He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles, Bernard and Robert Majikes; great-nephew Jarad Grohowski. Uncle Joe was very well known as the "Life of the Party" and will be missed by all who knew him. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Orchid Majikes, Chicago, Ill.; nephews, Frank and his wife, Lore; Raymond and Patty; Robert; Marty and his wife, Donna; Charles and his wife, Lisa; James and his wife, Cheryl; John and his wife, Mary; John and his wife, Laura, Chicago, Ill.; Michael and his wife, Denise, Cincinnati, Ohio; Nieces, Valerie and her husband, Chuck Manfre; Patsy and her husband, Mo Rodzinak; Barbara and her husband, Donald Smith; Jeanmarie and her husband, Jim Ryan; Maureen and her husband, Brian Grohowski; Linda and her husband, Jim Clarkson; Debbie and her husband, Tom Biagi; Connie and her husband, Bob Hartung; Bobbie and her husband, Bill Geegan; Marilyn and her husband, Jim Pater; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral will be held Monday at 9 from M.J. McLaughlin Co., 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 9:30 in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bear Creek. Friends may call Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m.
