A native of Mexico, Mo., Mr. Sunnen attended Chatham Collegiate Institute in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. In 1940, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State College in East Lansing, now Michigan State University.
A conscientious objector during World War II, Mr. Sunnen did alternative service as a volunteer in medical research at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He served as a "human guinea pig," undergoing testing and a starvation project.
While in Minnesota, he met his future wife, Yvonne "Von" Hanson Sunnen.
In 1949, Mr. Sunnen and his wife moved to St. Louis, where he was employed as a research/abrasive engineer at Sunnen Products Co. of Maplewood, a manufacturer and distributor of honing machines and abrasive products for the automotive and machine tool industry.
Mr. Sunnen was responsible for the company's research and development on abrasives and helped design its automation systems for low-cost honing stone production.
Mr. Sunnen helped the late Joe Sunnen, his uncle and the founder of the company, develop EMKO contraceptive foam, a low-cost contraceptive that could be used around the world.
Mr. Sunnen retired in l986.
Mr. Sunnen was also active at Christ Church Cathedral and was past president of the Maplewood Rotary Club.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ Church Cathedral, 1210 Locust. The body will be cremated.
