Sheryl Ann (Tierney) Peterson, 56, a Northland resident of Gladstone, MO passed away at Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by her loving husband and family on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was the first of three children born to James E. and Alda Joan (Kentner) Tierney on June 3, 1954 in Kansas City, MO. Sheryl attended St. Charles Borromeo Grade School, Antioch Jr. High, and graduated from Oak Park High School in 1972, continuing her education at Maple Woods Community College.
Sheryl was a member of Junior Achievement of Greater Kansas City, MO. She was the first JA to be honored for salesmanship by Greater Kansas City sales and marketing executives. She was an administrative assistant at Ashcraft Printing Company, Sunshine Biscuit Company and Federal Reserve Bank. Her greatest achievement was spent as a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She volunteered numerous hours serving on school boards, P.T.A., planning school parties, volunteering her time at Oakwood Manor Elementary School, working in the office and library, Girls Scouts of America and Tiger Cubs. Sheryl and Del, her husband, were members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She enjoyed boating, skiing, swimming, fishing and camping at Smithville Lake with her husband, family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her family, friends and extended family members. Sheryl always made sure there was plenty of food on the table, never turning anyone away. Halloween was celebrated with the large candy bars, never the mini-size bars. Birthdays and Christmas’s were celebrated with beautifully wrapped presents, delectable appetizers and desserts especially her home-made fudge. All of her nieces and nephews will remember and cherish her gifts of leather bound books at Christmas. She always knew the best books to buy.
She married her best friend, Del Peterson, on June 9, 1976 in Liberty, MO. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include her daughter, Joan Margaret, “Joanie” Lipscomb and husband Brandon of Orrick, MO; son, James Benjamin Peterson and wife, Janney, of Kansas City, MO; and family adopted son, J.C. Newman, of Orrick, MO; granddaughter, Emma K. Peterson and expected baby, Tierney, Lipscomb; parents, James E. and Joan Tierney of Gladstone, MO; brother, James E. Tierney, Jr., of Kearney, MO; sister, Loretta Bayless-Temple and husband, Cade, of Kansas City, MO; brother-in-law, Bob Peterson of VA; sisters-in-law, Betty Kunkle of FL, LeLa Peterson of CA, Sue (Dean) Schapeler of FL and Jane (Merl) Snow of FL; nephews, Patrick, Joe, Nigel, Ian, Richard, and Patrick and Jack Peterson of CA; nieces, Brionna, Tracy, Stacy, Susan; and numerous great nieces and great nephews; many aunts, uncles and cousins covering the entire United States; and many, many friends. The overwhelming love and support she received during her illness from her cousins, nieces and friends and neighbors are much cherished.
