Longtime Moab resident, Earl Deloy Shumway, 86, passed away on Aug. 13, 2012 in Grand Junction, Colo.
He was born Feb. 24, 1926 to Seth and Vivian Stevens Shumway, the fourth child of 12, and raised in Blanding, Utah.
Deloy married Belva Walker of Blanding, Utah and they later divorced. He married Juanita Joy Winder of Moab and they later divorced. They have a son, Jeff Atwood.
In 1954, Deloy married Inez Elmina Black Walker. Inez had two children from a previous marriage, Kathleen, and Kerry. Deloy and Inez had six children together – Susan, Earl, Reagan, Rhonda, Bradley, and Eric.
Deloy was gifted with athletic and musical talent; he played several instruments and had a beautiful singing voice. He went to college on a music scholarship and then served in the Army Air Corps as an "open air" tail gunner on fighter planes during WWII.
While in the service, he was a Golden Gloves boxer and excelled at any sport he tried. He played basketball, softball, horseshoes, was a golfer, and an avid bowler with a 255 average. Dad began shooting pool while in the military and became so good at it that shooters came from all over to try to win. It didn't happen often, and he still held an amazing stick up until the day he was hospitalized. Even in his 80s he still ranked high in the state billiard championship standings.
Deloy worked with his brothers, cousins and close friends in the mining industry in southern Utah for much of his life. He had several inventions and was well known throughout the industry and area as one of the most knowledgeable geologists anywhere. Deloy physically walked over almost every foot of San Juan, and Grand counties in Utah, and many in Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada as well. If there was a good rock or mineral vein, he could tell you where it was.
Deloy was an extremely intelligent, generous and kind-hearted man with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved shooting pool, throwing horseshoes, dancing, music, and walking out in the hills.
Deloy is survived by Kathleen Stubbs, Kerry Shumway (Marsha), Rhonda Redington, of Moab, Reagan (Ursula) Shumway of Blanding, Susan Shumway of Salt Lake City, and Jeff (Barbara) Atwood of Lehi, Utah; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters, Ila (Kay) Johnson, Clea S. Johnson, Vivian Joy Holliday, Iva Loo Perkins; and brother, Eugene (Kathryn) Shumway; sisters-in-law, Shirley Shumway, Patsy Shumway, and Cloe Ann Shumway, all of Blanding; and brother-in-law, Lyman (Daisy Mae) Black of Cortez, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez; sons, Earl K., Bradley Kyle, and Eric Steele; two grandchildren; brothers, Merwin Shumway, Burdette Shumway, Glen Shumway, Kenneth Shumway; sister, Dorothy Shumway; and sisters-in-law, Cassie Shumway and Erva Shumway.
