She was born in Wales, the daughter of William Hamer. James and Mary were wed on Dec. 24, 1841, and came to America a few months later. They arrived in Herkimer co., NY, in June 1842, both ill with "ship fever" caught on the voyage and the husband died in Herkimer. Mary had her son, James, in Sept. 1842.

About a year after James Jr. was born she married Charles Tanner, of England. They came to Boylston, Oswego Co., NY and resided the rest of their lives.

Nine children were born to Charles and Mary Hamer Tanner, Sarah, who married John Doneburg; John, who went to the Civil War and died of starvation in a rebel prison; Mary Ann, who married Emory Lester; twin daughters, Emeline, who married Elvin Blodgett, and Adeline who died of consumption when 19 years of age; Edward; George; Ella, who married Jason Halsey and, second, Sid Cornell and who now lives in Wolcott; and a little daughter, Eliza Tanner, who died when two years old

Mrs. Charles Tanner.

Mrs. Charles Tanner, one of the oldest residents of Boylston, died Tuesday night. Mrs. Tanner had been feeble for a year or so and had been failing rapidly the past two weeks but suffered from no particular malady. She was 87 years of age and for ten years had made her home with her son, James Hunt, who is one of the substantial men of Boylston. Her husband died three years ago last August. A native of Wales, she came to this country 60 years ago and first settled in Herkimer county locating in Boylston in 1847. She was twice married. Her first hushand, James Hunt, died in Herkimer county in 1842, leaving one child, James Hunt, of Boylston. In 1843 she married Charles Tanner and to them were born nine children, of whom four survive their parents, Dr. Edward,, Tanner, of Battle Creek, Nebraska; Mrs. Sarah Doenburg, of Syracuse, George Tanner, of Birch River, Mich.; Mrs. Ella Cornell, of Worth, Mrs. Tanner was a Baptist, having united with that denomination when, in Wales. She was most highly esteemed by all who knew her as a woman of great strength of character and was in her prime always ready and ever willing to assist and nurse the sick. Her robust constitution and kindly ways made her presence much sought after by her neighbors. Her funeral will be held from her late home on Saturday.
