The family recalls that "Uncle Edward" married "a Casteel from Williamstown [ WV, directly across the river from Marietta, OH ].

Catherine was a widow for many years and is buried with her husband's family.

Findagraver Shirley Casteel (#48225168) reported that this Catherine was her husband's aunt. That family recalls that after Catherine's husband Edward died, Catherine "worked for many years at a college, believe she was a cook and dorm mother." Marietta College would have been the most likely setting for that.

She also reported that Catherine went by "Kathie," was the daughter of Bert and Ada Casteel and sister of Charles Myer Casteel Sr., father of Shirley's late husband. This Kathie's Casteel family are buried in Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown WV, across the Ohio River from Marietta, Ohio, where Kathie is buried with her husband's family.

Descendants of this Catherine/Kathie's sister-in-law Laura Smith Padgitt recalled that Catherine/Kathie in Marietta had raised two children of her brother Charles Sr., during the children's school years: John "Billy" and Nancy Casteel. (Nancy is buried with her parents Charles Sr. and Helen Casteel.) Evidently, siblings John and Nancy also had another brother, Charles Jr.

The 1959 City of Marietta city directory -- the year after Kathie's husband Edward died -- reported she was a waitress at Broughton's restaurant and lived at 1001 Gilman Avenue. That was the same neighborhood section as where her husband's Smith siblings Frank Smith and Laura Smith Padgitt had previously lived, adjacent to each other. Kathie's husband Edward and his brother Frank had been house mates there for years, including during the 1940 census. Those houses, on Gilman at Leland Avenue, facing the Muskingum River, are not now standing or are in ruins.

Marietta also had another local Edward and Catherine Smith couple, who had a son Edward Jr., living on Wells Avenue (Norwood neighborhood) in 1940. That was not this Catherine and Edward, who lived across the Muskingum River in the Harmar/Dutch or Indian Run/Westview neighborhood.
