Politician. She was Austrian's first Secretary for Female Affairs in the 1990's and politician for the Social Democrat Party. She started her political career 1969 in the 14th district of Vienna. From 1973 to 1979, she was a member of the city parliament. In 1978 she opened the first "Frauenhaus," a refuge for battered woman. In 1979, Chancellor Bruno Kreisky asked her to became a State Secretary for Female Affairs, although it would be 11 more years before this office became a ministry. She was a fighter for equal treatment for woman and men. Franz Vranitzky, the Social Democrat Chancellor, dismissed her in 1995. Later, she worked with universities, as well as with the workers union, but she held no other politician positions. Starting 1981 she lived with Annemarie Aufreiter in a partnership, from 2010 in a civil union, which was legally possible from beginning 2010 only some weeks before she died.
