Professional football player. Born Stephen W. Van Buren, he played for eight consecutive seasons in the National Football League (1944-1951) as halfback, and safety in the team for the Philadelphia Eagles becoming one of the most representative players. In 1946 he obtained for the first time the record of yards gained on the race, a record that also won in 1947, 1948 and 1949, thus becoming the first running back in the NFL to achieve this in three seasons. On December 26 1948, Van Buren scored the only touchdown of the game with which Philadelphia Eagles won their first NFL championship against the Chicago Cardinals. He retired for a knee injury just before the start of the season 1952. In 1965 Van Buren was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He passed away because of pneumonia.
