James was born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, eldest child of Charles Martin and Mary Quinn Martin. James had two younger full sisters, Eliza and Mary Anne. Charles died in c. 1830. Mary re-married to Thomas Langan, and had at least nine more children, all born in Mullingar. Thomas Langan died in 1845. In 1847 or 1848, Mary Quinn Langan immigrated to America with her children. They settled in Buchanan, Missouri. In 1858, Mary Quinn Langan died, and James Martin married Bridget McCoy. In 1865, James and Bridget traveled the Oregon Trail with their three young children, and settled in Walla Walla County. They farmed the land there until Bridget passed away in 1898 and James in 1916.
