Born in Ohio, the second of ten children born to Dr. Wm Lyngae Colvig and his wife, Helen Maria Woodford, who crossed the plains in 1852 from Platt County, Missouri to settle in Rock Point, Jackson County, Oregon.

He was a direct descendant of a Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Colvig'ne and a Greek woman Zelesta Abigail Lyngae.

Volney Colvig married Florence Veach (1852-1920) on January 3, 1869 at Canyonville, Oregon. The couple had seven children:
Elmer William Colvig (1871-1951)
Ida M. Colvig Yost (1873-1936)
Eldora (Dora) Colvig Gillette (1875-1933)
Harry Colvig (1877-1936)
Frank Colvig (1881-1938)
Annie C.Colvig
John Logan Colvig (1892- )
