Father Johnson's first assignments were to Newman work at the University of California in Berkeley, followed by parish work in Portland and then directing the Chinese Mission in San Francisco. These three positions occupied the 1930's. In 1940 he was named Superior in Minneapolis and six years later became the procurator at Good Shepherd parish in New York. He was then named Pastor of Saint Austin's parish in Austin only to return to New York in 1950 to do parish work at Saint Paul the Apostle church there.
In 1952 Father Johnson joined the Paulist mission band based in Detroit. He then went to Boston for a brief time as procurator at the Paulist Center on Park Street. In 1957 he was appointed Pastor of St. Vincent's parish in Mobile, Alabama. He became a well-known and respected figure throughout Mobile. He left Mobile in 1963 to serve as procurator at the Paulist novitiate in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. He served as Novice Master there from 1964 to 1966. He then returned to San Francisco for light parish work and retirement.
Rheumatoid arthritis and cancer slowed him down after 1977 and he died in his sleep on July 11, 1979. He was 75 years old at the time of his death and had been a Paulist priest for 49 years.
