Roman Catholic priest. Originally from Paterson, New Jersey, he was ordained Feb 25, 1894 at St. Boniface Church in Paterson. Four days later, he was appointed pastor of the newly established parish of Sacred Heart Church in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Father Bender oversaw the building of the parish's church building, celebrating the first Mass in the basement on 6 Jan 1895. The church was completed by 1899 and a rectory was later built adjacent to the church. In 1913 construction for a two-story, eight classroom school was begun.

In 1921 Father Bender oversaw an expansion of the church, raising the seating capacity to nearly 1,100. In 1924, a third floor with four additional classrooms added to the school.

On Dec 9, 1931 Father Bender was named domestic prelate by Bishop John Mark Gannon, bestowing upon him the title of Monsignor.

Monsignor Bender died on Oct 11, 1933 at age 63 while still serving as pastor of Sacred Heart. Father Vitus J. Reiser was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart shortly after Mgsr. Bender's death.
