John Franklin Stephens married Elizabeth Wardlaw on Dec. 21, 1837 in Greene County, Alabama. They lived in Sumter County, Alabama until about 1845 and then moved to Hinds County, Mississippi.
In 1848 they moved to Sparta in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. Sparta was the Parish seat and he became the second Clerk of Court there. He moved to Coushatta, Louisiana in Red River Parish in 1867 and practiced law there until his death.
He was visiting family in Kentucky when he became ill suddenly and died. He was buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery.
