ARTHERTON, Calif. - John Henry Jacobs, a native of Escanaba, passed away at his home in Atherton, Calif., on Aug. 16, 2012, at the age of 84, after a shortbattle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his children.

John was born in Escanaba on Feb. 19, 1928, to parents Lawrence John and Marjorie W. (Oliver) Jacobs. He was the youngest of four children. After graduating from Escanaba High School, where he became an accomplished speed skater, John attended the University of Michigan where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and played the trumpet in the university's marching band. After graduating in 1951 with a degree in engineering, John attended Officer's Candidate School and served for several years in the United States Navy at Mare Island, Calif.

Following the Navy, John moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked as a sales engineer for General Motors. There, he met Jean Cook, his late wife to whom he was married for 40 years before her passing in 1997. They married and moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1958. There, John began his career as a stock broker and they had four children. In 1969 they moved to Atherton where they continued to raise their children and John continued his career in the brokerage business.

Growing up on Lake Michigan, John developed a passion for sailing at a very early age and spent many happy years during his youth aboard the celebrated Rose of Sharon. Later, he enjoyed cruising lakes throughout the Midwest, the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He was also an avid skier who took great joy in introducing his children to the sport.

In later years, he and his wife, Jean, loved to take cruises, while also returning again and again to Hawaii, their favorite spot of all. In recent years and up until he passed, John enjoyed nothing more than following politics, the stock market, meticulously tending to his home of 43 years, spending time with family, baking his late wife's famous cookies and watching his beloved Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by his four children, Robert Jacobs of Alexandria, Va., Peter Jacobs of La Quinta, Calif., William Jacobs of San Carlos, Calif., and Sally Jacobs of Tiburon, Calif.; daughters-in-law, Jennifer Jellings and Petra Jacobs; grandchildren, Trevor Jacobs and Sophia Jacobs; sisters, Shirley Johnson of Escanaba and Mary Yapp Whitney of Atlanta, Ga. His brother, William, pre-deceased him in 1969.
