EARLY PIONEER OF LAMONI DIED MON.

Frank Weld, 80, Was Mayor Of Lamoni For Two Terms

—One Of First Druggists

Frank M. Weld, 80, pioneer citizen and businessman of Lamoni, passed away at his home about 3:30 a.m. Monday, July 4, following a lingering illness of many years duration. He was born September 9, 1858, at Mission, Ill., to George and Mary Anderson Weld.

On September 14, 1887, he was united in marriage to Carrie Smith to whom one daughter, Rebecca, was born. They married by Elder Asa Cochran at the Liberty Home and went to house-keeping in a house that stood where the A J. Yarrington house now stands.

Later they moved over the drug store where the Sheppard Market now is and there the daughter was born. Very shortly after, they built the house that is the present home. During the time Mrs. Ressigue was postmistress, he served as her assistant for about 13 years.

In the year 1889 he was in the drug business with Dr. Hanson and Charles Barrows. Later Doctor Barrows bought the interest of Doctor Hanson and he and Mr. Weld were partners for a number of years. Eventually, Doctor Barrows bought the business and for the following seven years, Mr. Weld was in the mission field as elder.

He went to California for his health in 1907 for the greater part of the year and returned much benefited. He entered the real estate and insurance business but his declining health prevented him being active in his later life.

During his life in Lamoni, he served TWO terms as mayor, one in 1891 and again in 1910. He also was a member of the board of education for the public schools.

He leaves his widow, one daughter, one grandson, Joseph Nolan, two sisters, Mrs. Dave Danielson, of Leland, Ill., and Mrs. Phoebe Allen, of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held from the White Funeral Home Wednesday, July 6, at 10 a.m. in charge of Elder D. B. Sorden. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery. The daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Nolan, of Indianapolis, Ind., and son, Joseph, came Tuesday to be in attendance at the services.
