Henryk Szeryng, 69, violinist and cultural envoy:- Friday, March 4, 1988

KASSEL, West Germany Henryk Szeryng, 69, a leading violin virtuoso and cultural ambassador, died Thursday of a brain hemorrhage.

Mr. Szeryng was noted for a vast repertoire, especially his refreshing and moving renditions of Bach and Brahms, in a career that spanned more than half a century.

The Polish-born musician, who traveled on a diplomatic passport as Mexico's official cultural ambassador, also was famous for his ability to resurrect neglected or lost works for the violin.

Last fall, he delighted concertgoers in Atlanta with a performance of a long-missing concerto by Reynaldo Hahn.

Mr. Szeryng prided himself on introducing relatively unknown contemporary works worldwide.

At the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Szeryng, who was born in Zelazowa-Wola, Poland, and spoke seven languages fluently, was made Polish Prime Minister Wladislav Sikorski's official translator and later became a government liaison officer.

Mr. Szeryng never abandonded his music, however. He gave more than 300 concerts at Allied hospitals and bases - and in Britain even during air raids.

In 1941, he accompanied the exiled prime minister to Latin America in search of a home for some 4,000 Polish refugees displaced by the war. They were accepted by Mexico. Moved by this humanitarian gesture, Mr. Szeryng became a Mexican citizen in 1946.

Funeral services are being arranged in Monte Carlo, Monaco, Mr. Szeryng's European home.
