Husband of Lucinda Huey Blaine, who was his second wife after Jane Wilson.

Robert's ancestral family was confusing. His mother, Isabelle Lyon, was a twin sister who married the first cousin of Isabelle's husband, and both first-cousins were named John Patterson. The correct matching of the pairs is Isabelle with "Merchant" John Patterson and twin Nancy with "Esquire" John Patterson.

"Merchant" John was the son of another Merchant John Patterson of Bucks County PA, who was the son of the initial immigrant couple John and Jean Patterson. The first Pattersons were of Scottish descent to Northern Ireland and then to Montgomery County PA and then to Bucks County PA.

Miigrant John and Jean's other son, Alexander, father of Esquire John Patterson, came to the Tuscarora Valley, today's Juniata County PA and then his nephews -- sons of the Merchant John who stayed in Bucks -- joined him. Other sons of the original John and Jean also spread out to the then-bigger Cumberland and Franklin counties areas. But the Juniata area group were the Uncle Alexander family and the sons of his brother, Bucks Merchant John. Down the line, their descendants intermarried confusingly -- including twin sisters marrying first-cousin Pattersons of the same name.

The Lyon twin sisters were daughters of James Lyon, who was son of the original immigrant John Lyon, who also came to the Juniata area from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.

All of Robert's Juniata area relations are buried in Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery near Academia, PA. While just a few headstones show in Findagrave so far, there is a large collection of them at pennsylvaniagravestones.org -- including twin Lyons sisters and their husbands John Pattersons.

This Robert enlisted on Aug 6, 1863 in Boalsburg, PA with Company G, according to Patterson genealogy.

From his second marriage, his son James Blaine Patterson, daughter Isabelle Patterson Eldridge, son-in-law Myron Eldridge and son-in-law Henry L. Irvine are all buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

In addition to the children listed, below, Robert and wife Lucinda also had daughters Mary (who may have died young, Emma (who died at age 3 in Pennsylvania) and an unnamed baby who died as an infant.

Robert also had a daughter, Mary Jane, with first wife Jane Wilson. Jane died while Mary Jane was an infant. Then Mary Jane when she was 9, a few years after Robert's marriage to Lucinda. Mary Jane is buried with her mother, rather than with Robert's children by Lucinda.

It is not yet clear what connection Robert and Lucinda had to the District of Columbia when he was buried there in 1873. Lucinda shows in city directories there only after 1882, living with some of her then-unmarried children. One speculation is that Robert came to the District first, when their son James attended medical school there, and died there during a visit, and then the rest of the widowed family followed to the District from Harrisburg, where they had been living.
