The committee to whom was referred the duty of preparing expressions of sympathy upon the death of Brother John F. Richards, respectfully report the following:
One admirable feature of Odd Fellowship, and in which exists its greatest strength is that it treats its members with equity in its broadest sense. We claim that for our order that title namely, "to relieve the distressed, take care of the sick, comfort the widow, and maintain the orphan" is rightfully bestowed. Many having witnesses attesting this fact. The poor and rich alike receive from its bountiful treasures. No juror dissenting voice is heard with its sacred cholosures (?). In the bestowal of its bounties and sympathies. We endeavor to present to the view of the brothers the enormanty of sin and wrong. We chasten in mercy, not in the sterness of hard justice, but never forgetting the claims of right.
Brother Richards was initiated into Union Lodge, January third, 1853, having been a member twenty-eight years. He held a position of trust and honor from the lowest to the highest in Union Lodge, and performed the various duties assigned him with credit to himself and the Lodge.
He was possessed of a generous and benevolent heart - always ready to assist the needy and the suffering, in the utmost extent of his ability. We will cherish and remember his good deeds.

John F. Richards was actually married twice, both times in Dearborn County, Indiana. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Jordan on June 21, 1829. Apparently Mary died sometime after she had three children with John. Most likely this was about 1839. No record of her burial can be found and no record can be established in FAG. Consequently her three children have been added to the FAG listing for John's second wife - Susannah Brunson Richards whom he married on March 29, 1840.
