Mathematical psychologist, Social Reformer. Known as the founder of the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of California. Graduated in Aeronautical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1950 he obtained his research doctorate in Mathematics. Between 1954 and 1998 Luce as professor and researcher, has practiced his profession at Columbia University, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, teaching Psychology and Behavioral Science. His theory, according to which combining mathematical models with psychological experiments is possible to understand and predict human behavior, earned him the appointment as member of the National Academy of Sciences, the assignment of National Medal of Science and numerous other awards. He wrote more than 250 scientific papers and has published several essays, considered essential in social sciences, including "Dimensionally invariant numerical laws correspond to meaningful qualitative relations", "Fast, frugal, and surprisingly accurate Heuristics" and "Increasing increment generalizations of rank-dependent theories".
