U.S. Congressman. First Mayor of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Born in Galloway, Saratoga County, New York Allen Potter moved to Michigan as a young man. He was trained as a tinsmith, and became a successful hardware merchant and banker in Kalamazoo. He was elected several times to the Kalamazoo Village Council and the Board of Education. Potter served one term in the Michigan House of Representatives in 1857. He was elected as a Democrat to the US Congress in 1874, and served from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1877. He did not choose to stand for reelection, preferring to return to his business interests. In 1884 Potter was honored by being elected as the first mayor for the newly incorporated city of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
