Erected in 1989, the monument was designed by the sculptor Imre Varga and is dedicated to the memory of the Hungarian Jews whom perished in the Holocaust during World War II. The memorial which resembles a weeping willow tree, bears the names of some 600,000 on it's leaves. The inscription on the top of the memorial reads, "Whose agony is greater than mine".
