Emma Jane Grubaugh was born 11 May 1864 in Indiana to James Wesley Grubaugh and Jane Shafer. She was the second child of 3 born to this couple. Her mother died when she was 14 yrs old and her father Mary J. Lee in 1882. Emma was married three times. First, to William Phillips on 29 Oct 1882 in Marshall County, IN. Emma and William had one child, Daniel Phillips, born in Sep 1883. William Phillips died prior to 1884 and Emma married James Frank Quick on 12 Dec 1884. James Quick had been previous married and had two children from his first marriage, Minnie Quick (b.1879) and Pearl Quick (b.1881). His first wife also died in the early 1880s and he and Emma joined their families. They had 4 additional children together - Ethel Viola Quick (b.1885), John Wesley Franklin Quick (b.1888), Walter Cleveland Quick (b.1890) and Benjamin Harold Quick (b.1895). James Quick died sometime between 1895 and 1900, leaving Emma as a widow with 7 children. Shortly after 1900, Emma married Martin Lay. He also died - sometime prior to 1910, leaving Emma as a widow once again. Emma never married again. She moved to Hamilton, Butler, OH with her children and stayed there until she died on 30 Jul 1935.
Emma birth year is listed as 1856 on her death certificate, but she doesn't appear in the 1860 census and she is listed with the following ages: 1870 - 5 yrs old; 1880 - 15 yrs old; 1900 - 36 yrs old; 1910 - 45 yrs old; 1920 - 50 yrs old; 1930 - 69 yrs old.
