AGED CITIZEN DEAD IN 77TH YEAR
Squire Richard L. Stephens, a well-known and highly respected citizen, died at 5 o'clock yesterday evening at his home on East Third Street, of paralysis. His last illness continued about two weeks, although he had been failing in health for several months. Squire Stephens had followed farming until his latter years, and in this he was very successful. He was a man of wide acquaintance, and had scores of friends.
R. L. Stephens was the son of John and Rachel (Hensley) Stephens, and was 77 years old. He was married to May Anna Cox January 18, 1850, and this union was blessed with two children, James M. and Rachel. His wife died in 1854 and in 1857, he was married to Martha J. Lampkins. To this union there were eight children, Jennie Mosier (deceased), Homer B. (deceased), Mrs. Belle Yoder, James, John, Peter, Daniel and Crissie Hash. On August 7, 1906, the death of his last wife occurred.
The deceased has been a member of the Baptist Church for 42 years and always contributed liberally to its work. He lived an industrious, honest life and rasied a family of children who have been an honor to the community in which they live.
The funeral service will be held at the residence tomorrow at one o'clock in charge of Rev. T. J. Clark and Rev. G. R. Steele. Interment will be in the family lot at Rose Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers: A. H.Wilson, J. N. Alexander, W. H. Stephenson, Greenbury Cruse, W. J. Mefford and Henry Springer.
