Radio Commentator, Author on Nutrition and Health. Born Harold Carlton Caplan (he changed his name for radio) graduated from the University of Alabama in 1931 and received a masters's degree and doctorate, both in public health education, from New York University. Dr. Fredericks' was a radio host at WOR in New York, with his call-in program "Design for Living", offering nutrition advice. The show was broadcast six days a week by the station and was syndicated. His most frequent message to listeners was that they needed vitamin and mineral supplements, due to the modern food-processing methods that diminished natural nutrients. In the 1950s and 1960s, Dr. Fredericks had a long battle with government regulatory agencies over his nutritional theories. The Federal Food and Drug Administration seized copies of his diet book "Eat, Live, and Be Merry" in 1961, stating the book violated Federal law banning flase labeling. The agency said the book recommended treating ailments such as peptic ulcers and cancer with vitamin and mineral supplements that were "not effective." His other books include "Breast Cancer: A Nutritional Approach," "Psychonutrition," and "Cookbook for Good Nutrition."
