He was born Sunday, August 4, 1912 at Mill Creek, WV a son of the late Grover Higgins and Bell Killinsworth Higgins. On September 3, 1931 he was married to the former Myrtle Mae Taylor, who preceded him in death. Surviving are six sons, Henry Higgins, Laurel Mountain; James Higgins and wife Genevie, Laurel Mountain; Ronald Higgins and wife Lucille, Wheeling; Donald Higgins and wife Marlene, Beverly; Jack Higgins, Wheeling; Michael Higgins and wife Catherine, Chenoweth Creek; three daughters, Lona Everett, Belington; Helen Anderson, Wheeling; Patty Everson, VA; one brother, Russell Higgins, Sullivans Crossing; thirty one grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are three sons, John, Charles Ray and Eddie Allen Higgins; four brothers, Roy, Warren, Clettus and Ott Higgins; and two sisters, Mellissa Bender and Gertrude Deffinbaugh.
Ernest attended the schools of Randolph County and worked as a Coal Miner for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and various other companies. He was a farmer, an avid hunter and a Protestant by faith.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, March 2, 2007 at 11 AM. The Reverend Kevin Gainer will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV.
