Prominent area banker J. Frank Mattern died unexpectedly at his home in Mapleton at 5:30 this Thursday morning. August 19, 1976. He was 83.At the time of his death, he
was chairman of the board of the First National Bank of
Mapleton. After beginning his banking career in 1912 at
Beaver Springs, Mr. Mattern became the first cashier of the
new Mapleton banking establishment in 1918. A native of Troxlerville, Snyder County, he was born September 2,1892 to James M. and Ella (Spangler) Mattern. On June 27, 1915, he married the former Lizzie Fiss. Surviving are his widow
and two sons, Robert, Wyomissing. A daughter, Mrs. Sara Knecht, and a son, James preceded in death. There are nine grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and sister, J Richard, Drums and Mrs. William (Bulah) Knop, Baltimore, Md
He belonged to the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Mount
Union, and served on the Church Council for many years.
He was a member and treasurer of the following organizations: F&AM Chapter No. 688, Mount Union; Standing Stone Royal Arch, Huntingdon and P.O.S. of A., Mapleton. He also belonged to the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, and the Knights T,emplar, Huntingdon, and was a charter member of the Mapleton Fire Company. Active in civic affairs, he
served on both the Mapleton Municipal Authority and the
newly - formed Huntingdon County Area Vocational Technical School Building Authority. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 21, from the St. Luke
Lutheran Church, Mount Union. The Rev. Russell Nprris will officiate. Burial will be in the Haven Reste Memorial Park ,Shirleysburg, R.D. Friends will be received at
the Heath funeral home in Mount Union from 2 to 9 p.m.
Friday, and at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until
time for service. Masonic memorial rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.Friday at the funeral home.It is requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions should be sent to the church of the donor's choice.
