In the early years of his life, between 3 years old and 7 ½, Alexander Logan Garrison lost both parents, a step-mother and both grandfathers to death. He lived for a while with his maternal grandmother (his paternal grandmother died before he was born) but she died when he was 14.
He was in the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War and became a farmer. In his adult life, he suffered the deaths of his first wife and 8 children.
His grandfather had acquired 800 acres of farm land in White County but after passing to his heirs, almost all of it was out of the family. During his lifetime, Alexander purchased all 800 acres that his grandfather had owned but as with his grandfather’s estate, most of the heirs either sold or lost the farms at the time of the Great Depression.

A.L. was married to Matilda Stephens February 11, 1866, with which he had 10 children.

His second wife was Nancy Alice Jamerson (Taylor) and they were married February 20, 1884. Their children that grew to adults were Lura Garrison Abshier, Lucy Garrison Questelle, Dillard Garrison, Alex Garrison, Joe Garrison and Roscoe Garrison.
