Jim Gahnz

Heaven has drafted its top Packer fan. James W. "Jim" Gahnz passed away peacefully on July 25, 2011 while recovering from back surgery in Mesa, Ariz.

Jim was born April 25, 1927 in Wausau, son of the late Art and Clara Gahnz. He grew up with two older brothers, Glenn and Sheldon, who both preceded him in death. After graduating from Wausau High School in 1945, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II and in Korea as a hospital apprentice first class and was honorably discharged. He traveled to many parts of the world in the Navy, but somehow always found his way back to Wausau. Jim worked for Wausau Insurance Companies for 37 years before retiring in 1985.

God sent Jim the love of his life one magical night in Minocqua. He met his wife Judy at the Thirsty Whale. They lived 34 wonderful years together before Judy was called to Heaven after a courageous battle with cancer in 1996.

Jim lived in Mesa, Ariz. permanently since 1993 but always called Wisconsin home. He loved to attend Packer games, visit his friends from Wausau Insurance and Connexus Credit Union and spend time with his best man and best friend Ron Goetzke. Jim was a fierce shuffleboard player, a great dancer and a wonderful friend to many. On Sundays, Jim was a regular at a Green Bay Packer sports bar in Arizona.
Survivors include his children, Steve (Gina) Gahnz, Julie (Brent) Grimes and Jeff (Beth) Gahnz and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Elaine James.

Most importantly, Jim was a believer in our Lord Jesus Christ. He was reading the Psalms at the time of his death and his belief in the Lord gives us comfort at this time of grief.

There will be a private burial service for immediate family.

The family has decided to celebrate Jim's life rather than mourn his death. The celebration will be Saturday, August 27 at 4:30 p.m. It will be held at the Green Mill, 1000 Imperial Ave Rothschild, WI, adjacent to the Holiday Inn & Suites.

There is a strict dress code for the celebration. You must have Packer gear or a short sleeved dress shirt (pocket required) to attend. No ties will be allowed.

In lieu of flowers or a memorial, the family requests that you join them at the Green Mill for a toast and to share a story or two about Jim. If you can't make it, then a quick prayer will be most welcome.

Jim touched many lives while he was alive. We were blessed to know him.

The family is thankful for the outpouring of love and support during this time.

Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 6th Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements.
