Richard Lewis Saunders found his elusive peace on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the age of 82. He was preceded by his mother, Anne Landa Saunders, his father, Charles "PY" Mahlon Saunders and his eldest brother, Charles M. Saunders, Jr. He is survived by his dedicated, selfless and devoted wife of 59 years, Pattie Martin Saunders, his older brother, William G. Saunders, his three children, Nancy Carol Saunders, Richard L. Saunders, Jr., and Laurie Saunders Poole and his five grandchildren, Cosmo A. Saunders, Madelyn R. Saunders, Richard L. Saunders, III, Cyrus J. Sorenson and Chance L. Sorenson. "Dickie" started his teaching career at LaCross High School and was principal at Smithfield High School, Bowling Green Senior High School and Caroline High School. He was also head coach of basketball and baseball during his tenure at Smithfield High School. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon College and received his Masters from the College of William and Mary. Dickie was a life-long member of the Kilwinning-Crosse #22-237 Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and giving instructions and bestowed his love of dogs and cats to his family. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday, August 24th at Storke Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, August 25th at Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Melvin Covington officiating. Pattie and family wish to thank all of their friends and neighbors that provided company and assistance during Dickie's thirteen years of convalescence and Debbie George, primary caregiver extraordinaire, and Molly, Linda and JoAnn.
