On July 19, 1862, Benjamin enlisted as a private in company C of the 79th IL regiment in Paris, IL. His profession was noted as a Miller and was 5" 6 1/2" high with black hair, grey eyes, and dark complexion. He was mustered out as a sergeant at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL on June 12, 1865.
They moved to Winfield, Cowley County, KS and had

7) Augustus Swan on 25 Dec 1874
On June 9, 1880, Benjamin filed for an invalid pension for the Civil War service (#376.844). On October 20, 1890, Phoebe filed for a widows pension (#481389, cert. 355583).
