Polar explorer. In July, 1897 he made an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon. The attempt failed, and he and his fellow expeditionaries Nils Strindberg (born 4th of September, 1872) and Knut Frænkel (born 14th of February, 1870) died at White Island in their attempt to return back. Their bodies were not recovered until 1930. The grave contains the ashes of all three members of the expedition.
