French scientist and engineer. Nobel Prize Physics Winner. Known for being the discoverer of radioactivity. Graduated in Engineering at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, he devoted his research to optical physics, and more specifically to the infrared rays. In 1888, Becquerel obtained his Doctorate of research by a thesis on the absorption of light in crystals, and thanks to this he was appointed member of the Académie des Sciences. During his years of teaching at the Ecole Polytechnique he accidentally discovered the phenomenon of radioactivity, which in 1903 earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics along with Pierre and Marie Curie. The unit of measurement of the "Système international d'unités" for the radioactivity and a derivative of uranium ore were dedicated to him.
