William T. Anketell was a United States Volunteer during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.

He enlisted on May 3rd, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company K of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hawkins Zouaves, on May 4th, 1861, at Castle Garden, New York. He was promoted to Sergeant, but was later reduced to the ranks on August 7th, 1862. He served with the regiment in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, taking part in actions at Roanoke Island, South Mills, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, as well as other skirmishes. He returned to New York with the regiment and was mustered out of service with the Company on May 20th, 1863, at New York City, New York.
