Pioneer Lady Dies
Mrs. Mary Ann Youd West, one of the pioneers of Spanish Fork, died at her home yesterday morning at ten o'clock from stomach trouble after an illness of five weeks, though she has been in failing health for nearly a year. Mrs. West was born in St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 9th, 1852 while the family was making the long journey over the plains to Utah, her father being Thomas Youd. Mr. and Mrs. Youd reached Utah the same year, settling first at Salt Lake City, where they made their home until 1856, in which year they moved to Spanish Fork, where they took part in building a new settlement. Mary A. Youd married Zachariah West, whose parents were also pioneers, on September 16th, 1868. Of this union twelve children were born, eight of whom survive her. Mrs. West became a member of the church in her early girlhood and was always a faithful member. For the greater part of her life she was a member of the Female Relief Society.
Following are the surviving children, all of Spanish Fork: Mrs. John S. Stoker, John W. West, Joseph D. West, James A. West, Arthur West, Mrs. Thaddeus Edwards, Lewis B. West. Nineteen grandchildren also survive her. One brother, Bishop John P. Youd of Lake Shore, and three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Bellows and Mrs. Jane Measom of Lake Shore and Mrs. Henry B. Hicks of Clinton are still living.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Third ward Meetinghouse and interment will be made in the city cemetery beside her husband who died twelve years ago.
