John F. Howes, 73, a lifelong resident of Sanford passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Sanford. He was born in Sanford on March 10, 1939, a son of the late Harry Jr., and Helen (Cleveland) Howes. A graduate of Sanford High School, he then served in the US Navy from 1958 until 1961.

Mr. Howes had previously worked for a short time at Tucker Chevrolet. He then worked as a sales agent for Metropolitan Life. In 1974 he joined his brother Roger and together formed Howes Construction. After receiving his real estate license he was building and selling homes. When he retired he had been employed the Gil Dion Agency

He recently was baptized by Rev. Carlton Gunn.

He enjoyed line dancing and spending time socializing with his friends at the Sanford Dunkin Donuts.

He is survived by his children, Timothy Howes of CT, Michael Howes of Berwick, Matthew Howes of Newburyport, MA, and Beth Howes of Newburyport, MA, 11 grandchildren, two brothers, Roger Howes of Saco, Herbert Howes of Grand Rapids, MI, his significant other of 12 years, Eva Hagins of Sanford.

A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday at 10AM at the Curtis Lake Christian Church in Sanford. Burial with military honors will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in his memory to the Autism Society of Maine, 72B Main Street, Winthrop, ME 04363.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
