Lenore Schaeffer, age 108, of Phoenix, passed away December 16, 2004. She was born July 25, 1896 in Chicago as the fourth of eight children.

After moving to Tucson in 1948, Lenore devoted herself to family and community and became involved in numerous volunteer activities. She was one of the founding members of the Tucson chapter of the City of Hope and a lifetime member of B'nai B'rith, Hadassah and the Goldstar Mothers.

Short, but oh so mighty, Lenore lived life her way and danced to the beat of her own drummer. A competitive ballroom dancer until age 101, Lenore danced for Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. She was also the subject of numerous articles in Newsweek, Ms. Magazine, the New York Times and the Arizona Republic.

She was preceded in death by her parents, I. H. and Adella Mittelman; her siblings, Molly Stickler, Nate Mittelman, Sam Mittelman, Ben Mittelman, Dorothy Siegel, George Mittelman and Judy Goodman; her second husband, Michael Schaeffer; her sons Avery Segall and Harvey Schaeffer; and her granddaughter, Diane Davidson. She is survived by her sons Ira Segall of Wilmette, IL and Louis Schaeffer (Gene) of Phoenix. She is also survived by her grandchildren Linda Segall (Thom) Anable, Alan Segall, Russell (Kandi) Schaeffer, Marlene (Uri) Mabashov, Howard Schaeffer, Corey (Anita) Schaeffer, and Lex Schaeffer; her great grandchildren, Elana Mabashov, Darren Mabashov, Chase Schaeffer, Stefanie Schaeffer, Chad Schaeffer, Hannah Segall, Alex Segall, Mari Schaeffer, Zachary Schaeffer, Chance Schaeffer and Price Schaeffer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sunday, December 19, 2004 in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the City of Hope, 6245 N. 24th Pkwy., #110, Phoenix, AZ 85016, or to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary of Arizona.

Her passion for dance began at age 12 in her native Chicago. She was mesmerized by the expertise of one Harry Segall, "the best dancer at Jane Adam's Hull House," as Schaeffer describes the 16-year-old boy who would become her first husband. But when she remarried at 42, she packed her dance shoes away. Her second husband, Mike Schaeffer, was unable to dance for health reasons. At age 82, some time after his death, Schaeffer brought her shoes out of retirement -- and despite her failing eyesight -- went on to perform for audiences all over the country. ("I could see well enough to avoid the other dancers," quipped Schaeffer, who added that it helps to have a professional dance partner.)
