Adna was the son of James Hickox (1733-1783) & Ruth orvis (1735-1783).

He was about 20 years old in 1787 when he started for the wilderness of central New York, stopping along the Genesee River where he bagan helping with the survey of a large tract of land previously purchased from the Seneca Indians.

However, the Indian Wars started while he was so occupied, & Adna, along with 6 others on the survey team, were taken prisoner by the Indians. To save themselves, they insinuated themselves as much as possible into Indian life over the next 3 years until the war was over & the Indians defeated.

Some years later he was in White Pigeon, St Joseph Co, Michigan where he was married about 1797 to Polly Andress (1769-1820). They settled at Grosse Isle some 18 miles below Detroit, & during the War of 1812, & with settlers being massacred all around by Indians, the Hecox family hurriedly moved into the fort at Detroit, & they were there when General Hull surrendered.

In 1814 the family moved south to Brownstown, 16 miles south of Detroit.

Children of Adna & Polly include:
