Relief Worker Ends Life With Sawed Off Shotgun

Claude Justice, 41, a relief worker, committed suicide at his home, 956 Walnut street, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock when he fired a shotgun into his face.

Warning his family he was going to kill himself, he said, "I want to die and I'm going to shoot myself." This statement was made by him at about 2:00 p.m. yesterday in the presence of his children, and a few minutes later he asked where his shotgun was.

His daughter, Stella, 15, realizing the seriousness of his statement slipped the gun from a closet and hid it behind a kitchen cabinet. It was a .12 gauge, double barrel shotgun which had been sawed off.

He had been drinking since last Thursday according to his wife, Emma, who his from him when he was looking for the gun. She said Justice had become intoxicated shortly after 12:00 o'clock noon yesterday and she said she thought he might go to sleep and recover from his state of intoxication if he was left to himself.

She was in another room of their home when she heard the gun discharge. Going to him she found him lying dead on the floor in the kitchen and gun was standing on end by the kitchen cabinet. The barrel of the gun apparently been placed in his mouth with the stock resting on the floor. The shot blew the back part of his head off, killing him instantly.

From all indications he leaned over the gun while it was standing on end, reached down with his hand, and pushed the trigger. The gun was standing at the side of the cabinet behind which it had been hidden, when Mrs. Justice found it.

Justice had been a relief worker for the last year but had been unable to do much since he was struck by a car near his home a month ago. He had said on Saturday night, while he was drinking, that he was going to take his life.

While he was searching for the gun yesterday he offered his daughter a relief check of about $9 he had coming tomorrow if she would locate the gun for him. She did not and he is said to have continued looking for the weapon for an hour and a half before he located it.

Surviving besides his wife are six children, Clarence, Anna, Belle, Treasy, William Lee, Stella, and Eliza, all at home; three brothers, James, William and Homer, all living in Kentucky, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Earls, Madison, route one; Mrs. Minnie Orr, at Brooksburg, and Mrs. Mattie Jones, living at Florence, Indiana.

Funeral services will be held at the Justice residence tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in charge of Mrs. Ashley, pastor of Pentecostal Mission.

Mr. Justice's death is the third that been caused by suicide within the last months. Mrs. Herman Ashby, who lived across the street from the Justice home, took poison and Alfred Davis, of 110 east First street, shot himself with a shotgun last week.
