Pioneer Resident of Los Angeles, he came to California in 1869 and had lived in Los Angeles since 1871. Born in Germany, before coming to America, he had lived in Melbourne, Australia. His first wife was Katherine Sees, and they were the parents of seven children. After her death, he married Anna C. (Sprengel) Priester in 1887, she being the widow of his brother. He was the third settler in Hollywood, then known as Cahuenga. There he owned a 100 acre ranch located near what is now the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, where he grew grain.
