His U.S. World War I Registration Card states that he was a naturaized citizen, born in Stavanger, Norway. He was a farm laborer at the home farm in Halstad, Norman Co., Minn. He was single and requested an exemption from the draft due to his father's needing his help with labor.

On his registration card, the name given, Jurgen, was scratched out and George written in. It was possibly his name before immigration. He was described as medium height, medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

George was drafted into the US Army on 24 February 1918. He served with the 123 M.G. Battalion, 33r Infantry Division and as discharged on 29 May 1919.
