Mary Sue Osborn Coleman, 87, of Amarillo died Wed-
nesday, Aug. 15, 2012.
A celebration of life
reception will be at her home, 4015 Montague Drive in
Amarillo, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery in Muleshoe. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Coleman was born in Clovis, New Mexico, on Nov. 17, 1924, the daughter of Jesse M. Osborn and Grace May Golden. The family moved from Friona to
Muleshoe in 1931. She was a proud graduate of
Muleshoe High School and attended Texas Tech
University. She was a member of the Muleshoe Methodist Church.
She married John
Buchanan Coleman on June 26, 1946, at the Osborn home. They moved first to Louisville, KY, for Dr.
Coleman to complete his dental degree and then to Portales, New Mexico in 1949, where Dr. Coleman established his dental
practice and she acted as office manager. In Portales, she served as president of Chi Chapter, Xi Lambda
Chapter, and Preceptor Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi; the J.P. Steiner P.T.A.; and the Portales Garden Club.
Mrs. Coleman was also president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Mother's Club when the chapter was forming at Eastern New Mexico
University. She served as a member of the Advisory Board of Portales Chapter #5, Order of the Rainbow Girls and was Mother Advisor for two terms. In recognition of her service, she was awarded the Grand Cross of Color by the Grand Assembly of New Mexico. She was
initiated in the Order of the Eastern Star, Muleshoe, TX in 1947, and remained a
lifelong member.
Dr. and Mrs. Coleman moved to Amarillo in 1989. She served as president of the Daniel Wing Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century, and held offices in Alibates Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists and
Panhandle Colony, Magna Charta Dames. She was a former member of the
Genealogical Advisory Board of the Amarillo Public Library. She also belonged to Sons and Daughters of the Colonial and Antebellum Bench and Bar and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the U.S.A. She was honored by the Department of History and Political Science at West Texas A&M University for her support of the faculty and students. She was
recognized as a member of the Old Main Society of West Texas A&M University for her generous gifts for scholarships for students. She was an avid fan and season ticket holder of both the Amarillo Dillas and Gorillas.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Edgar Marion Osborn; a sister, Norma Lee Osborn Mayben; a niece, Norma Sue Mayben; and a nephew, George William Mayben.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Lee

sister-in-law, Lucy Davis
Coleman of Winnsboro, SC; five nieces and nephews and their spouses, Sherri Allyson Mayben Stockner and
husband Chris of Palmdale, CA, George Franklin Coleman III, Amos Davis Coleman, and Creighton Buchanan Coleman and wife Marion, all of Winnsboro, SC, Lucy Davis
Coleman McCoy and husband Peter of Hartsville, SC; and fourteen great-nieces and great-nephews.
