Illness Fatal to Jay Bettinger, 80

Jay Bettinger, 80, a lifelong resident of this area, died shortly afternoon Saturday, September 13, 1952. He had been a patient in the Cheney Nursing home for four months and in failing health for nearly a year.

He was born in the Town of Ellisburg, Jefferson County, August 4, 1872, the son of Philetus and Celia Ehle Bettinger of this vicinity. He received his education in the Lum
District school. He owned and operated farms in Ellisburg and later on the Orwell-Lacona Road in the town of Sandy Creek. He had been a well-known dealer in fancy poultry and eggs in past years.

Active in Grange

In 1904 he married Alma DeWitt, who died August 7, 1927. He was an active member, of the Sandy Creek Grange for many years.

He is survived by one son, Floyd, long in Army service and now stationed with the army band in New Foundland; a brother, Garry Bettinger of Mannsville; three grandchildren and two nephews.

The funeral service was held at the Weston & Woodard funeral home at 2 p. m. Monday. Rev. Selden ward of Sandy Creek Baptist church officiated, with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Bearers were Will Soule, Claire Soule, Tom Soule, Charles Soule, Harold and Ralph Bettinger.
